DALEY NEWS

10:00am -- Mayor Daley announced some manner of affordable housing plan at Sanctuary Place.  We should know more in a few days.

DALEY CHATTER

  • 5% or 328 of Chicago Public Schools teachers are National Board Certified, a pinnacle of teaching achievement, the Sun-Times reports.  While that may seem like a dismally low percentage, it's actually much higher than Los Angeles' 129 tally or New York City's 10.  Mayor Daley took an opportunity to tout Chicago in comparison to these other big cities when he said:

"If we're leading the way, God help the rest of the country. I feel sorry for them. You wonder what has happened to public education in the rest of those cities."

  • WBEZ reports that Mayor Daley has no favorite in the special election that will fill the Congressional seat now held by Rahm Emanuel.  Emanuel is leaving his seat to be Chief of Staff in the Obama White House.  Please note the grateful attitude of Sara Feigenholtz, a top contender for the seat, who couldn't be more pleased that Daley isn't backing anyone:

"You know he, I believe, has a very open mind. I think that that's good. I think it's good for the democratic process. And I think that it will be a very spirited campaign."

  • An overlooked issue, no doubt due to it not exactly being a sexy topic, is the increase in red light cameras being installed throughout the city.  So far as we can tell, there has been little to no local coverage of this development.  Oddly enough, MSNBC saw fit to devote some space to it.  So be careful out there folks.  This writer has been snapped by one of these cameras already.  Appearing overnight completely without warning, they're likely to get you too.

Chicago Teacher says:

Chicago Public Schools once again funnels teacher and taxpayer money into an unproven program. The waste in this system is deplorable! I can’t believe I’m quoting the queen of edupreneurs: “`Washington DC’s reform superintendent Michelle Rhee has dropped the school system’s direct support for instructors seeking certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards,... citing a lack of evidence that the training improves student achievement.' Most qualified research has found no strong link between a teacher’s National Board certification status and her students’ academic results.”
Is there something about CPS that PRECLUDES them from conducting educational research to promote PROVEN strategies?

Thanks so much for the interesting comment. Can you please post a link to where that quote comes from? I'd love to learn more about this issue and I'm sure other readers would as well.

Good article on the Chicago public schools. Reminds me of my education back in Canada.
