Daily Daley

A daily briefing on Chicago politics, with a special emphasis on what the Mayor's up to.

Mayor Daley is Being a Good Sport

Mayor Daley presides over a City Council meeting while we ponder his brief sports TV fame and reflect on our affinity for caricaturing politicians

DALEY NEWS

10:00 am -- Mayor Daley attended the monthly City Council meeting held at, where else, City Hall.  Want to know what actually goes on at these meetings?  You can find out here.  A noteworthy issue to be voted on at the meeting was this.

DALEY CHATTER

  • A new morning show has premiered on Comcast SportsNet.  The hosts are well-known local sports commentators Dan Jiggetts and Mike North.  Why are we telling you this?  Because the inaugural broadcast featured none other than our very own Mayor Daley.  Ed Sherman at Crain's gave us a, pardon the pun, play-by-play of the first show and had this to say about His Honor's appearance:

The highlight of the show was a visit from Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley during the 8 a.m. hour. Mr. North had fun with the mayor, asking him to fix his parking tickets and what garb he wears to watch football games.

The mayor stumped for the Olympics and continued to throw out the notion that Chicago could support a second NFL team. That won't happen because of two words: Da Bears.

  • In what we hope was not a comment aimed at us here at Daily Daley, Ramsin Canon of Gapers Block made a very valid point yesterday.  Ramsin is indeed correct and we hope everyone considers his words very carefully:

The Mayor is liable for criticism on lots of issues and we should slam him when he's wrong, but we need to be really careful not to turn our fellow citizens in politics (or entertainment or whatever) into cartoon character villains; we all have a tendency to do it, especially with guys like the Mayor, who is a colorful personality who has now run this city for a generation.

For shame, Daily Daley! If it was aimed at anybody, it was aimed at myself! Keep up the great work.

Why thank you! We appreciate your kind words and, we hope, continued patronage (hahaha :-))
